The LatticeStix Difference: Design, Craftsmanship, Materials

Pattern Collection
Embedding patterns in lattice creates a whole new design opportunity. To help designers focus in on styles that are suitable for their project, LatticeStix 100+ patterns are organized into common-themed Pattern Collections. Each collection includes kindred motifs, with a broad range of subtle variation.

Lattice Profile
Lattice profile determines the amount of light and privacy that the lattice affords. Profile is determined by the geometry of the sticks(face and depth), and stick spacing. We manufacture lattice in a wide range of profiles, and always welcome customer specified profiles. Our two most common profiles are 3 inch edge and 3 inch flat lattice.

Edge lattice graphic Edge Lattice is made from sticks that are deeper than they are wide. It looks (and is) stronger than typical lattice.

Edge lattice patterns play particularly well with light and shadow, and the pattern itself changes with viewing angle. Edge Lattice is typically used where there is a desire to emphasize the ornamental quality of the lattice, or for railings, plant trellis, and other applications where view control is less important.

Edge lattice graphic Flat Lattice is built from sticks that are wider than they are deep. It is suitable for applications where a great deal of privacy or view protection is desired.

Aesthetically, the wide stick-face and smaller openings play down the intricacy of the pattern, and the lattice looks more barrier-like. Flat lattice is not as strong as Edge Lattice, and is not suitable for railings and other structural applications.

Joinery
LatticeStix products are built to last. The joints are typically ½ lapped with hardwood dowels and waterproof glue. There are no nails, pins, staples, or other mechanical fasteners that will loosen over time, or may rust creating an unsightly stain on the lattice.

LatticeStix patented PinLock connections use a clever system of horizontal doweling that locks a lattice components together into a matrix and produces our strongest lattice.

Our gates all use butt joint dado’s to integrate the lattice into the frame and ½ lapped rails and stiles secured with mahogany pins.

Materials
LatticeStix uses a variety of high quality and sustainably grown woods for our products.

Western Red Cedar – Western Red Cedar is a strong, light stable wood with excellent decay and rot resistance. We use only clear vertical grain stock. When oiled, the cedar takes a range of colors from light toffee to chocolate.
Mahogany – A harder wood then cedar, mahogany has a very fine grain, excellent rot resistance properties, and takes on a reddish pink patina when oiled.
Paint Grade Poplar – For interior applications, primed poplar is a cost effective solution for site applied finishes.
Other Species – Call for other interior species including White Oak, Walnut, Beech, and others .

Finishing
LatticeStix selects our stains based upon quality of color, durability, environmental friendliness, and ease of maintenance. To protect the environment, our employees, and our neighbors, LattticeStix only uses low or no VOC, solvent free, water based finishes.
Exterior Solid Stains – We apply stains so that there is a hint of the original wood color and grain showing through, emphasizing the wood craft beneath the color.
Solid Stain Maintenance: Should be cleaned every 2-5 years, and a clear coat re-applied.
Interior / Exterior Penetrating OIl - Old Growth Tint – The reds and browns in our custom old growth tint emphasize and modulate the deep reds and browns of Western Red Cedar. OGO oil creates a striking saturated, wood effect.
Penetrating OIl Maintenance: Should be cleaned every 2-5 years, and another coat of OGO oil applied.
Unfinished - Both Western Red Cedar and African Mahogany of excellent ourdoor durability without any finish. Once the gray tone has been reached(3-6 months), a waterproofing silicon sealant should be applied, and re-applied yearly or as directed.
Primed - WE use a urethane based primer that will take most paint / lacquer top coats.
